Gosky 1.25" laser collimator for Newtonian Telescope Alignment

Gosky1.25" laser collimator allows one to conveniently align the optics of a reflecting telescope. It provides a quick, easy way to determine if primary and secondary mirror need adjustment, and make the necessary adjustment quickly and easily.

Calibrate primary mirror of telescope

Insert the collimator into the focuser, tighten the screws on the focuser to lock it. Turn on the collimtor. when the red laser dot isn't in the center of primary mirror, by turning the alignment screws you can adjust the centering of the secondary mirror. when the laser dot is centered on the primary mirror, you have finished the alignment of the secondary mirror.

Calibrate secondary mirror of telescope

With adjust primary mirror collimator screws. the laser beam on the bull-eye screen on the collimator will move. the pirmary mirror will be properly aligned when the laser dot hits the center hole of the bulls-eye screen.

Care and maintenance:

Avoid exposing the collimator to the water, dust, heat or prolonged periods of direct sunlight. store the collimator in a cool, dry environment.

A must-have item for getting the clearest views. This is a great collimator and made it easy to align my Celestron Powerseeker 127EQ scope. I took out my scope a few nights ago and had great views of Jupiter''s moons and Saturn''s rings, views which were previously very fuzzy.

The printed instructions are concise and helpful to have, and it''s nice that the laser has various brightness levels for nighttime use.

Some notes for collimating a Powerseeker 127EQ:
- rotate the telescope so the eyepiece holder is horizontal
- slide the eyepiece holder as far out of the scope as possible
- remove the 2 small screws that hold the focusing knob in place (be careful not to lose parts and note that there is thick lubricant on the internal parts)
- pull out the eyepiece tube
- remove the small lens at the end of the tube by unscrewing the retention ring (set the lens & ring aside for now)
- place the eyepiece tube back in the scope & reattach the focuser screws
- insert the laser collimator and follow instructions for aligning your mirrors
- follow these steps in reverse to put things back together (don''t forget to put the lens back in place!)

There seem to be around a dozen companies selling similar collimators, perhaps with their own laser module, but otherwise the same. This unit has three (rather than two) Allen head screws for adjustment (no rubber stoppers). Mine came spot on (rotate the collimator in the focuser 360 degrees to see if the red dot is stable on the secondary -- if not it will trace a donut around center. There was a little slop on the focuser end, which I fixed with a layer of Scotch tape. I like just having the 1/4" end on my collimator -- I figure if the inserts in my 2" MoonLite focuser aren''t true, then I have generaL problems using a 1/4" eyepiece. I''ve reality checked my collimation with star tests (primary / in-out focus) and this is spot on for me. Quality control may or may not be an issue, but my purchase was perfect. Where there a laser collimation problems (and there might be anyway in the long run) then you can easily adjust this with the Allen head screws.

After reading other reviews, I embarked on purchasing this unit for my vintage Celestar 8. I bought the scope used and was expecting the worst - I wanted everything to be as close to perfect before I take it outdoors to use. Plugged the laser in (minus points for not having a battery - or instructions), and lo and behold - my scope was way out of alignment. As another poster mentioned, the body of the laser is slightly smaller than the aperture of the eyepiece, so it was a little loose. Just make sure to tighten the eyepiece screws completely or you may get a false reading - I did. I double checked everything and rotated the scope in multiple directions to keep checking. Got it as close as I can - we''ll see after this rain moves out!

Fortunately it is the same battery my red dot finder uses red so I had an extra in my eyepiece box. There were no instructions included with my collimator. Orion has shore videos on YouTube that explained how to do this. Straight forward and simple. I am now getting much more Jupiter surface detail. I see Cassini division in Saturn rings even with not the best Summer time viewing condition in my backyard. I''m very pleased.

My "initial" try at manual collimating was a disaster. It was so far off I couldn''t figure out what I had done. Once I placed this in the eyepiece, I had my telescope fully collimated within minutes. This is definitely worth the few dollars.

I have a short tube Jones-Bird catadiotric (Celestron powerseeker 127 but also a lot of other scopes). Doing what the instructions said, it looked collimated, however stars looked lopsided so ordered the collimator. NOTE TO ALL: you have to remove the corrector lens at bottom of focus tube before you use the collimator. There are at least two You Tube videos that show you how to do this but you basically loosen the two screws between the focus knobs and pull the entire focus tube out. Remove the barlow and insert collimator. First thing to do is just turn on laser and put a sheet of paper and see where it goes. If you don''t see anything your diagonal is probably centered or close to it. In my case the laser beam missed by at least two inches. So first thing is get diagonal adjusted with the three screws of top end of telescope. When laser is turned back on and is no longer missing the diagonal, time to go to back of scope and look forward into bulls eye and keep adjusting back screws until it hits the bulls eye. That part took about five minutes. Put Barlow back in focuser and focuser back into telescope. Now everything works great. Could not have done it without the collimator. This thing works great!

I bought this for my 6" reflector telescope that I''ve never collimated before, and according to this device the mirrors were really far out of alignment. I knew they were when I first used my telescope after moving out of state and the image quality was terrible.

I read through the enclosed guide and got my mirrors aligned in 10 minutes. Took my ''scope out and aimed at Jupiter on a not so good evening and saw cloud bands I have not seen with a 25mm eyepiece for a long long time. That tells me my mirrors were off for a long time and that this collimator works like a champ.

I have only ever used this one collimator, as such I cannot say if a different product will work better. However, you only need to read the reviews on collimation to see that, “have laser will collimate”, is not how it works. Firstly the neck of this collimator does not help the collimation process. This is because eyepiece holders are so poorly designed themselves. Shame on you pretend telescope manufactures. It is laughable that they use the words precision or professional in their marketing material. I think you’ll find none of them have ever tried leaving earths atmosphere, would never return, due to dodgy instruments. When you combine those two flawed designs, you end up with a collimation mess. This collimator does not fit snugly in the eyepiece, too much play. To fix this you need a collimator that self-centres. This is the one time when being self-centred would be a good thing. And I think this is one of the reasons non-laser collimation appears to work. The eye is less precise than the laser. I tried tape on the collimator to centre it, but this is where poor eyepiece holders come in. The collar of the 130mm Celestron reflector is narrow at the top, with a sleeve, then increases after the plastic collar. This means the collimator rattles round in the holder. Sure the eyepiece screws hold the collimator, all they do is push it out of alignment. If anyone cared they would address it, those scope and collimator makers. I do not think we.can say that, if you take any reflector scope, you can be sure that you can collimate it using this tool. I collimate it without the tool during the day, outside, then verify it using this collimator - that is purely to make myself feel better. I feel fine, now. It can also double as a regular laser pointer and has brightness settings, and at it brightest it reaches far into the distance. You can easily use it to tease the neighbours cats by shining it on the wall. Don’t shine it in their eyes, you can use your uncollimated scope to check on them; the cats I mean, not the people. Shame. Until and unless someone smarter than all the telescope manufactures come up with a cheap and effective way to collimate, we the common people will debate the paranormal activity around scope setup. Good luck finding a solution, but I bet we will have colonised Mars before we are all collimated.
